Buying Second-Hand Bikes in the Netherlands: What Consumers Really Want

In a country where bikes outnumber people, you’d think buying a bicycle would be easy. But when it comes to second-hand bikes, Dutch consumers face a surprising set of challenges — from stolen bikes and unreliable sellers to uncertainty about e-bike batteries.

To better understand consumer needs and behaviors, we spoke with Wouter Duijndam, fietsexpert at ANWB, who shared his insights into how Dutch riders approach second-hand bike buying, and how platforms like BikeFair can help change the market.

The Biggest Challenge: Trust in E-Bikes

According to Duijndam, one of the most common hurdles is trust in the electrical system and battery when buying a used e-bike. Unlike a traditional bike, e-bikes come with electronics that can wear down or fail “Consumers are often held back from buying secondhand e-bikes because of the electronics,” he explains.

This lack of trust not only discourages buyers but also drives down resale values, even when the bike itself is in good condition.  Bikefair ensures the seller’s offer is valid and its representation of the bike for sale is accurate.  If proven that the seller misrepresented the bikes condition, Bikefair will facilitate the return and refund.

Price, Convenience, and Trust — All Matter

So, what drives Dutch bike buyers most: price, convenience, or trust? Duijndam argues that it’s all three, with each factor representing different target groups.

Research backs this up: Gazelle holds the highest second-hand value among Dutch bike brands — a sign that brand trust and quality strongly influence consumer decisions. When asked what matters most overall, Duijndam points to two factors above all:

  • Affordability
  • Reliability

Younger vs. Older Riders: Ownership vs. Access

Trends also vary by age. Younger consumers increasingly turn to rental or lease options for convenience and flexibility. But, as Duijndam notes, there’s a trade-off: “Ownership shows that people are more engaged with their bike,  and it’s cheaper to operate in relation to renting or leasing.” For many, leasing offers access to newer or more expensive models, while ownership remains the more cost-effective choice.

Why Verification is Key

With over 500,000 bikes stolen each year in the Netherlands (CBS), it’s no surprise that safety and verification are top of mind. Duijndam is clear: “Verification is mandatory for both buyer and seller. And it’s important to share this message.” This is where platforms like BikeFair, which check every listing against the Dutch theft register, can play a critical role in building trust and reshaping perceptions of second-hand bikes.

The Circular Economy Opportunity

The conversation isn’t just about safety — it’s also about sustainability. With growing awareness of the circular economy, second-hand bikes are increasingly seen as part of the solution to reduce waste and extend product lifespans. By 2030, EU rules will require manufacturers to predict and take responsibility for product lifespans, such as guaranteeing bikes for eight years. Extending that lifecycle, says Duijndam, creates real added value.

Final Thoughts

The second-hand bike market in the Netherlands is evolving fast. Consumers want affordability and reliability, but they also demand trust, transparency, and sustainability.

Buying second-hand doesn’t mean compromising on safety or quality — it can actually be the smarter, greener, and more reliable choice. As Duijndam puts it: “Verification isn’t just important — it’s mandatory. If platforms can offer clarity on quality, batteries, and warranties, then second-hand bikes can finally get the value and trust they deserve.”

Today, every bike on BikeFair is checked against the Dutch theft register and comes with proof of purchase — giving buyers a safe, transparent way to shop. While technical elements such as e-bike battery diagnostics or full repair histories can depend on the seller, the company is continuously working with partners to bring more transparency and reliability into the e-bike segment.
